A Coaching Success Story

 

Setting the Scene

 

A few months ago, a client (let's call her Sarah) came to me feeling a bit stuck in her career. She loved her job but felt she deserved more recognition—and a better paycheck. Sarah wanted a promotion but wasn’t sure how to go about it.

 

Step 1: Identifying the Goal

 

First things first, we needed to pinpoint exactly what Sarah wanted. During our initial coaching sessions, we talked about her career aspirations, her current role, and where she saw herself in the next few years. Turns out, she was really enjoying her role but felt she was outperforming the original role she was hired for just 18months ago and felt she wasn’t be rewarded in line with that.

 

Step 2: Crafting the Plan with GROW

 

To help Sarah achieve her goal, we used the GROW coaching methodology, which stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will.

 

- Goal: We clearly defined Sarah’s goal as achieving a promotion in line with the work she was currently doing.

- Reality: We assessed her current situation, identifying her strengths and the gaps she needed to fill to be eligible for the promotion and payrise.

- Options: We brainstormed different strategies and actions she could take, from improving specific skills to increasing her visibility within the company.

- Will: Finally, we created an actionable plan with specific steps Sarah was committed to taking.

 

Step 3: The Power of Benchmarking

 

Here’s where it gets interesting. To bolster Sarah’s case, we did some benchmarking. We researched similar roles in other organizations and discovered they were paying significantly more for the same job. Armed with this data, Sarah was ready to show not just why she deserved the promotion, but also why her new role warranted a higher salary.

 

Step 4: Making the Case

 

Sarah compiled all her accomplishments, the skills she’d developed, and the benchmarking data into a compelling case. She then scheduled a meeting with her manager. To her delight, her manager was impressed—not just with her achievements but also with the thorough research she’d done on industry standards. She then had the opportunity to talk to the one over one manager, recognizing this was an important networking opportunity she prepared ahead of time by writing clear questions that would help her achieve more in the future.

 

Step 5: Success!

 

Fast forward a few weeks, and Sarah was officially promoted and yes, she got the pay rise too! Her manager appreciated her initiative and the evidence-based approach she took to justify her request.

 

Lessons Learned

 

Helping Sarah was incredibly rewarding for me too. Here are a few takeaways:
